Gypsum Sinkhole in Capitol Reef National Park

Cathedral Valley in Capitol Reef National Park is a striking and somewhat remote area well worth a visit for those with higher clearance 4WD vehicles. Gypsum Sinkhole seen here is the result of groundwater dissolving a buried plug of gypsum. Please note that standing on the rim of this depression (as this photographer did) is NOT recommended! The geology of Cathedral Valley and Capitol Reef covers a broad span of time.

Not far from Capitol Reef, Goblin Valley provides another unique landscape to explore. - Martin van Hemert
