The San Rafael Swell Region of Utah contains the remains of several old mining operations.  At the Copper Globe Mine, this miners’ cabin was built into the side of a small hill:

The Copper Globe Mine was active from roughly 1900 to 1905, but produced very little ore, due to the low grade of ore found here.  Attempts to smelt the ore onsite failed due to kilns, which were partially built with “green” bricks, melting before the ore melted.

Early evening can be a time when all elements come into perfect harmony.  Moonlight, twilight, starlight, and distant city lights can combine in a perfect moment:

The sky in this view provides many visual treats such as star clusters, jet contrails, and a couple of satellites.  The long camera exposure has made the first quarter moon (half illuminated) appear as a round beacon in the sky.  See the panorama footnotes for more information.

In Big Cottonwood Canyon, a spot that’s beautiful any time of year:

The lake is almost completely covered with snow in this view, with just a little spot peeking through.  Sundial Peak above it is a local icon among hikers.  A bit steep, but still a great summer or fall hike, in the snow I was reminded of the Brett Weston quote “Anything more than 500 yds from the car just isn’t photogenic”, and was hoping that would not be the case for me!
