A Winter Night’s Sky
At this time of year, I find a renewed fascination with things celestial, and I hope you find this Christmas offering to be more than dots in the sky and sage on the ground. I very much appreciate all of you who subscribe to these mailings and take a moment out your busy days to view these panoramas. I enjoy receiving your posts and emails, and try to answer them all (I’m sure I miss some).
Utah has many great areas from which to view the night sky. This panorama was made between Kanab and Lake Powell. The opened panorama text will contain a link to a second panorama with constellations labeled:
Whatever holiday you might observe, I hope for you the very best.
Merry Christmas,
Martin

Martin,
We have enjoyed these right along. If physically capable we would still be out somewhere camping on state parks, blm land, forests, etc. where we spent almost every weekend in our 20-60′s. Your work is only next best to the real thing!

Hi, Martin -
Glorius! Simply stunning, Martin. There are so many items in this 360 that make it great: the foreground, the bright portions on the horizon, the dirt road, and of course the night sky. For the foreground, did you paint it with flashlight? And, I’m curious about your camera settings: ISO, exposure time, etc? How were you able to get the beautiful night sky with no noise in the exposure?
The night sky in the Rockies is truly breathtaking. The first time I really saw the night sky was at Maroon Lake near Aspen, Colorado.
Thanks, Martin. This will be sent out to all of my friends.
Gregg

The Utah sky at night always impressed me with how many stars were visible. Being a “city dweller” we are lucky to see the very brightest stars here in Illinois. Milky Way looks splendid. Wonder what that brightest star in the middle of the sky is?

Martin: As always, nice job. I would like to make a suggestion, maybe you’ve already heard this one, if so just ignore it. One the Second Panorama, I think it would be nice to see N – S – E – W directions so we’d know which direction we were looking? Also the town lights in the distance, maybe locate them on the panorama, Maybe one was Kanab? If this is a lot of trouble, but it would be nice, at least to me.
Happy Holidays to to you and your also Our home page has a video we made for holiday wishes..

Hi Don, good to hear from you. Your suggestions are great. As far as the cardinal directions, on a previous sky panorama I put them, and I don’t know why I didn’t think of it here. I will have to update the image in the next week or so.
Merry Christmas,
Martin

Hi Martin….simply magnificent…it fully absorbed my vision. Thanks for the Seasons gift.

Hi Gregg,
Thanks for your comments! Regarding your questions, yes, the foreground was painted with a flashlight. Exposures were, as I recall F4.0 or F5.6, 30 seconds, at an ISO of 4000-5000. LightRoom helps with noise reduction.
Best,
Martin

Hi Theo,
Yes, Holland is different, and beautiful in its own way. I enjoyed the Rotterdam panoramas. I have been to Den Haag, Leiden, and Delft (my mother is from Delft), but never Rotterdam.
I hope you had a good Christmas, and that your New Year is good as well.
Bedankt,
Martin van Hemert
